Neuro-ophthalmology

Peoria and Bloomington, Illinois

Good vision depends on an intact link between the eyes and the vision centers of the brain. Many conditions and diseases can interrupt this link. Neuro-ophthalmology is a subspecialty of ophthalmology that deals specifically with this link.

Symptoms

  • Blurred vision
  • Double vision
  • Asymmetrical pupils
  • Eyelid or facial contractures
  • Eye or head pain
  • Unexplained vision loss

If you experience a sudden onset of any of these symptoms, seek help immediately. Neuro-ophthalmic disorders can lead to blindness and may even indicate a life-threatening condition.

Neuro-ophthalmology patients often have conditions such as brain tumor, stroke, inflammatory diseases of the eye socket, conditions affecting the optic chiasm, and diseases of the optic nerve. In addition, damage to the optic nerve can result from drug overdoses, exposure to environmental toxins, diabetes, bacterial and viral infections, among other things. Conditions and disorders include:

  • Diplopia (double vision)
  • Visual migraine
  • Strabismus
  • Hemi-anopia
  • Optic atrophy
  • Optic neuritis
  • Papilledema
  • Papillitis
  • Pituitary adenoma
  • Ischemic optic neuropathy

Diagnosis and treatment

A comprehensive eye exam will be necessary for a diagnosis. Other tests may be required as well. These may include ultrasound, ocular photography, electrophysiology and optical coherence tomography. Treatment will depend on the underlying nature of the problem. Our physicians have extensive experience treating all of these conditions. We use conservative treatments whenever possible, but surgery is sometimes necessary.
