Our history

Dr. Lockhart is my hero!!  I love my new visual freedom.  I am a very active person teaching, coaching volleyball and jogging.  Now I can continue my active lifestyle without the hassles of glasses or contacts.

Dr. Watson Gailey started an Otolaryngology practice in Bloomington, Illinois in 1908 to serve the community needs and to provide the finest medical and surgical ear, eye, nose and throat care.   In 1912, Dr. Gailey went to Vienna, Austria to study diseases of the eye.  When WW I broke out, Dr. Gailey enlisted in the US Medical Corps and later headed the eye department of the U.S. General Hospital in Lakewood NJ.  He returned to Bloomington following the war.   Dr. Gailey was a true pioneer in the field of ophthalmology and was a nationally renowned specialist in his field. He traveled extensively to acquire the knowledge necessary to open a clinic specially designated for eye care.

In 1941, Dr. Gailey opened the first Gailey Eye Clinic in Bloomington. In 1951, Dr. Gailey and Dr. Albert Frell established the fourth eye bank in the U.S. at the Mennonite Hospital in Bloomington. In March 1987, the Gailey physicians and Bromenn Regional Medical Center entered a joint venture to open a surgery center dedicated to eye surgery. Twenty years later, the Gailey physicians assumed operation of the ambulatory surgery treatment center. Today, the Gailey physicians offer the most technologically advanced, safe and effective procedures for the treatment of eye problems at the Bloomington Eye Institute. BEI is located at 1008 North Center Street.
